Swimmer Ahmed Hafnaoui of Tunisia was the surprise winner in the men’s 400-meter freestyle at the Tokyo Games.
The 18 years old finished ahead of Australia’s Jack McLoughlin who settled for silver after leading much of the race, and Kieran Smith grabbed another Olympic medal for the Americans.
Hafnaoui powered home over the last 50m, touching the wall in 3:43.36, far quicker than the 3:45.68 he swam in qualifying on Saturday. Letting out a scream when he realised he had won, he pumped his fist and pointed at the electronic scoreboard
His gold medal is only the fifth won by a Tunisian athlete in the Olympics, but their third scoreboard.
Yesterday, Tunisia grab her first when Jendoubi lost 58kg Taekwondo final match to Italy Vito Dell’Aquila to settle for Silver.
Tunisia is the only African country with a medal at the ongoing Olympics and in 6th position, with Japan, China, USA, Australia and ROC leading medal table race respectively.
