Nigeria was scheduled to face Sao Tome in a 2024 WAFCON first round with the first leg encounter set to be held in Lagos on September 22 while the return leg will be held on September 26 in Sao Tome but that will no longer happen as the Sao Tome and Principe Football Federation has written to CAF, notifying them of their decision to withdraw from the qualifiers.

Remember that Nigeria and Sao Tome and Principe recently locked horns in a 2023 Afcon qualifier in Uyo and in that game the Super Eagles spanked Sao Tome and Principe 6-0 and if added to the 10 – 0 they collected in the first leg that would be 16-0 on aggregate.

Seeing the outcome of the male team against Nigeria, the Sao Tome FA has decided not waste their resources against the African number one ranked team.

Sao Tome FA believes what their male team suffered in the hands of the super eagles will be nothing compared to what they will face in the hands of Super Falcons as they believe the super falcons are more ruthless than their male team and so they wish to avoid further embarrassment.

following the withdrawal of Sao Tome, The Nigeria Super Falcons will now await the winner between Liberia and Cape Verde in the second round.
