Nigerian football fans were stunned when broadcaster SuperSport aired the USA versus Wales World Cup match in Pidgin English.

History is being made with the global showpiece in Qatar, with African audiences to be treated to the local commentary of matches throughout the tournament.

But the lady behind the sweet pidgin on Super Sports is no other person than Tracy Chapele-Ugo a.k.a “Suo The Queen Of Sports” who is one of Africa’s finest female pidgin sports commentator (football/ basketball/athletics).

At age 34, Suo believes she has only scratched the surface of the swiftly opening frontier that is pidgin sports journalism.

Pidgin commentary and coloration has come a long way from Sydney 2000 Olympicswhenenre Emeka Enyadike became the first sports journalist to fly the pidgin flag on international digital broadcast. With well over 25million native speakers of pidgin creole, more platforms are becoming proactive in seeking a pidgin colorations to events, a report by MH Nguyen shows there’s been a marked 65% increase in audio/visual content in local coloration in the digital media space post COVID.

Tracy is a Pidgin English sports commentator, currently working with Wazobia FM and Super Sports.

Tracy went viral in December 2021 when she bagged a chieftaincy title belonging to her father in Udu Delta State.
