Natalie Simon Became the first black woman to referee an MLS game when she took charge of San Jose Earthquakes’ win over Real Salt Lake on Saturday September 16.


Born in 1990, Natalie Simon was delegated for the center Referee role after severally serving as a fourth official in the Major Soccer League – MLS.

The 33-year-old is one of the four American women with a FIFA refereeing badge and the first African-American to hold one.

Born in Louisiana, Simon started her referee career in 2022, and today she was in charge of the game between San Jose and Real Salt Lake.

Natalie Simon is the 140th person, 5th woman, and 1st Black woman to be assigned as referee for an MLS match
