The Gambia Women’s U-20 team on Friday 24th September, 2021 narrowly lost 1-0 to Burkina Faso in the first leg of their FIFA U-20 World Cup qualifiers at Bakau’s Independence Stadium.
Foday Bah’s charges put up a dominant first half display and missed two glorious chances to take the lead. Fatoumatta Jammeh’s free-kick was fumbled by the visiting keeper as the ball slipped from her hands and through her legs but she reacted quickly to gather the goal-bound ball before it went past the line. Teddy Jatta also saw her shot ricochet off the post to safety.
The hosts’ profligacy in front of goal would come back to haunt them when Naome Kabre capitalised on a mix-up in the Gambian defence to net the game’s only goal in the 78th minute.
Coach Foday Bah and his changes will now have the task of overturning the deficit when they play in the second and deciding leg in Ouagaduogou in a fortnight’s time on 9th October, 2021.
